The Story Behind Our Costa Rica Coffee

You might have noticed that three of our bundles feature our Costa Rica coffee. There is a reason for that. It is our best-selling roast for a reason. We want to tell you a little bit more about why this coffee is so special.

The beans come from the Santa Elena estate. This is a farm located in the Tarrazú region of Costa Rica. This area is famous in the coffee world because it produces high-quality beans. The coffee grows in the highlands, between November and February.

We roast this coffee to a medium level. When you drink it, you get a crisp taste of citrus at first. Then, it smooths out into a buttery finish. It is elegant enough for a coffee expert, but approachable enough for anyone to enjoy.

Why The Process Matters

The quality of coffee depends on how it is grown and processed. The farmers at the Santa Elena estate do things the right way.

First, the coffee cherries grow in the shade. When they are ripe, workers pick them by hand. They sort them carefully to make sure only the best beans make the cut.

After picking, the beans go through a "honey process." This does not mean they add honey to the coffee. It refers to how the fruit is removed from the bean. This process leaves a little bit of the natural fruit sweetness on the bean while it dries in the sun. This is why the coffee tastes so sweet and silky.

The farmers also let the beans rest for at least 30 days before they are shipped. This resting period helps the flavor settle and develop.

Grown at High Altitude

You might hear coffee roasters talk about altitude. It actually makes a big difference in flavor. Our Costa Rica beans are classified as "Strictly Hard Bean" or SHB.

This means the coffee was grown at 1,250 to 1,650 meters above sea level. When coffee grows up high in the mountains, it grows slower. The beans become denser and harder. Denser beans usually have more flavor and higher quality than beans grown lower down.
